Auronzo of Cadore

Once past the stone lions that recall the relationship with the Serenissima, AURONZO opens up to the eyes of the visitor as a green basin, framed by the DOLOMITES and crossed by the Ansiei torrent that, thanks to the barrier formed by the ancient dam, gives rise to the beautiful artificial lake of Santa Caterina, in which its entire historic center is reflected. Lake Auronzo, also known as the "mirror of the Dolomites", has become one of the most important attractions of the place: along its banks there are equipped beaches and enchanting spaces for total relaxation.

Situated at an altitude of 864 metres above sea level and with almost 4,000 inhabitants, Auronzo is a charming tourist resort and summer and winter health resort that extends for over eight kilometres along the longest valley floor in Cadore and, along the beautiful valley that leads to MISURINA, there are nature trails of great interest, where flora and fauna intertwine harmoniously in an area that extends for around 220 square kilometres, from which rise some of the most famous peaks in the world, including the majestic TRE CIME DI LAVAREDO.

Interesting and evocative in Auronzo di Cadore are the countless excursions in the Dolomites, the long cycle path that runs along the Ansiei torrent for almost 8 km starting from the lakeside, in addition to the rich local cultural heritage of Churches, Chapels and Palaces designed by famous personalities and the multi-thematic Museum of Palazzo Corte Metto, recently renovated in its historic naturalistic collection and integrated with an important archaeology section that houses finds from investigations and excavations conducted in areas of worship and inhabited areas located in the territory.

Auronzo also offers the possibility of practicing various sports, such as: tennis, minigolf, bowls, mountain biking, trekking, boating on the lake, sport fishing, horseback excursions, fun bob, roller or ice skating, hockey, bromball, the latter all in the covered stadium, sledding, snowmobiling, ice-karting, cross-country skiing on rings of various lengths and difficulty and downhill skiing on the snow of the Monte Agudo and Misurina districts, included in the “Dolomiti Superski” circuit, whose slopes, always perfectly snow-covered, are served by modern ski lifts.

About halfway between Auronzo and Misurina, the town of “Palus S. Marco” opens up, where the SOMADIDA STATE FOREST is located: one of the most beautiful woods in the entire Cadore forest heritage, which has survived intact to this day thanks to effective, uninterrupted protection work over the centuries, and whose survival must be ensured by respecting it in all its grandeur. Management is entrusted to the Administration of the State Forests of Vittorio Veneto, while surveillance is carried out by the staff of the Palus S. Marco Forestry Command, which also offers guided educational-naturalistic walks with the aim of making people aware of, appreciate and respect a natural environment of such high value.

MISURINA , a small hamlet of Auronzo and a renowned high mountain tourist destination, located at 1756 m above sea level, is known throughout the world for its extraordinary natural beauty, so much so that it can boast the title of “Pearl of the Dolomites”.

Its romantic body of water lies in one of the most solemn and majestic Alpine basins, surrounded by woods and Dolomite peaks.

With a vast number of well-marked trails and well-located refuges, Misurina is undoubtedly a paradise for amateur hikers, as well as for expert ones, thanks to legendary climbs, such as the numerous “routes” on the Tre Cime and Cadini, opened by legendary mountaineers.

As early as 1900, Misurina was chosen as a holiday home by Queen Margherita, who arrived there after the assassination of Umberto I, and even earlier, in 1892, by the poet Giosuè Carducci who came up there from Auronzo and took a room in the historic Albergo Misurina.

Misurina is perfect not only as a tourist resort, but also for its high altitude, very low humidity, richness of ultraviolet radiation, absence of sudden temperature variations and low concentration of antigens, which make it an ideal place for the pathology of respiratory diseases; it is precisely here that the “Dolomiti Pio XII” Institute operates, an important Center for the treatment of juvenile asthma.

AURONZO, together with MISURINA and the TRE CIME DI LAVAREDO, has been one of the most famous Dolomite destinations for international tourism, both summer and winter, for over a century. Even the poet Giosuè Carducci, who stayed there in 1892, composed part of his “Ode to Cadore” here, with which the entire Cadore area enters Italian poetry for the first time. In particular, he sang of Auronzo: “... Auronzo beautiful on the plain stretching long between the waters under the dark Ajàrnola ...”
